Nick Merrylees   Lighting Designer


Nick Merrylees is a lighting designer who is based in Melbourne and works with Theatre@risk, Melbourne City Opera, Red Stitch Actors Theatre, Commonplace Productions, St Michael’s Grammar School and Handspan Visual Theatre. 

Nick has been the lighting designer for Melbourne City Opera’s productions of Tosca, Gianni Schicchi, Cavalleria Rusticana, Il Trovatore (which toured to Traralgon), Falstaff and Don Giovanni.  His designs with Red Stitch Actors Theatre have been The House of Bernarda Alba, Where’s My Money, The Play about the Baby, Psychopathia Sexualis, Uncle Bob directed by Kaarin Fairfax, By The Sea, Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love and The Lights. 

Nick’s designs, with green room nominated Theatre@risk, include Polygraph directed by Chris Bendall, The Speculator, Tower of Babel development and The B File.  Nick designed the lighting for The Terms and Grammar of Creation with Commonplace Productions at the State Library of Victoria which won the award for most outstanding fringe production at the 1999 Green Room awards.  He was lighting and video designer for Handspan’s Lift ‘em up Socks which toured to Brisbane, the Northern Territory, Melbourne, Vienna and Montreal. 

Nick is currently working with Jigsaw Theatre Company as video and lighting designer on Vin which will be showing in Canberra in June.  Other credits include Doing the Dash (program 1 and 2) with VCA dance school, Designer Child, Hotel Charles with VCA Opera Studio, Amadeus, Top Girls, Lord of Misrule, Chicago, The Bullant, Blue with CIA and directed by David Branson, Les Miserables with St Michael’s Grammar School, Corpus Christi with Polemic Productions and directed by Catherine Hill, Escape from the Living Dead, Man Friday, The Idiot, Alive at Williamstown Pier by Neil Cole and A Policewoman’s Absurdity.  Nick was assistant lighting designer on MTC’s Art and Soul.
