Lynore McWhirter began her musical studies at the age of 10 in violin and piano. Later she studied voice with Brian Hansford at the Victorian College of the Arts Opera Studio, singing the roles of Susanna in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Lauretta in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, Belinda in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Jessie in Kurt Weill's Kleine Mahagonny. During this time she sang with the Australian Opera Chorus in productions of Mozart's Don Giovanni and Wagner's The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. In 1982 she went to London and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Vocal Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying with Esther Salaman. Professionally she has worked in London as soloist in both opera and oratorio. Roles have included Pamina in The Magic Flute, Fiorilla in Il Turco in Italia, and Rita in La Rita. She has also been a regular recitalist at St Martin-in-the Fields, St John's Smith Square (recorded by the BBC.), Australia House and the Royal Pavilion, Brighton. In 1987 she was a semi-finalist in the International Singing Concours, at Lyon and the same year recorded the soprano solos in Enchanted Summer and Walsingham by Sir Arnold Bax, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Vernon Handley (Chandos). Since returning to Melbourne in 1988 she has sung with the Australian Opera and VSO in various productions and has been in demand as a recitalist performing an extensive repertoire in opera, oratorio, lieder, cabaret and lighter musicals. She has been recorded by ABC FM and Radio National and was a semi-finalist in the Shell Covent Garden Scholarship. In 1995 she was the soprano soloist in the highly successful Allegro al Fresco, and in 1996 she sang with the Victoria State Opera understudying Aida. Currently she is working with Opera Australia and made her debut as Oscar in Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera with the Melbourne City Opera. |
