Martha George Anna Margolis


Anna Margolis was born in London, studied Music at London University then won a scholarship to study Postgraduate Singing at the Royal Northern College of Music Manchester, where she sang Carolina in II Matrimonio Segreto. She has studied with Janice Chapman and David Harper, and most recently with Dinah Harris. She has also worked with Linnhe Robertson, Robert Tear and Lillian Watson and received Bursaries to study Mozart operatic roles with Antony Retie Johnson and French Song with Susanne Danco and Hugues Cuenod, both at the Britten-Pears School.

From 1998-2002 Anna was a member of Welsh National Opera where she sang the roles of Zerlina Don Giovanni, Sandman/Dew Fairy Hansel and Gretel (conducted by Vladimir Jurowski), Frasquita Carmen, Ida Die Fledermaus, il Paggio Rigoletto, Papagena The Magic Flute and The Cockerel The Cunning little Vixen (conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras).

She sang the title role in The Cunning Little Vixen for the WNO Max Dept, created the title role in Katerina, a new opera for WNO Max, and understudied the roles of Servilla La Clemenza di Tito, Karolka Jenufa, Despina Cosi fan Tutte and Barbarina Le Nozze di Figaro for WNO. Work for other companies includes Micaela Carmen English Pocket Opera; Despina Cosi fan Tutte and Gretel for Bel Canto Opera; Belinda Dido and Aeneas for Palace Opera, Holland Park; Johanna Sweeney Todd for Surrey Opera; CioCio San Madama Butterfly for Cameo Opera; Miss Wordsworth Albert Herring for Mayer-Lismann Opera. For the VSO she has understudied Rose in Lakmé and for the Buxton Festival Opera, Madame Herz The Impresario and Fortuna II Sogno di Scipione.

Music Theatre includes Pacquette in Candide at the Riverside Studios, London and the rote of Antoinette in The Dancing Master for the Battersea Arts Centre, which was written for her. Frequent concert appearances include recitals for the Covent Garden festival and at Southwark Cathedral, Handel arias and duets with the English Baroque Ensemble at the Concert Hall Dublin and the Bristol Hippodrome, Bach Cantatas at the St David's festival, Walton's Facade, Les Nuits d'Ete conducted by Nicholas Cleobury, Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony, Handel's Messiah and Haydn's The Creation. Anna moved to Melbourne in 2003 and Rosina in MCO's The Barber of Seville marked her Australian debut. Future engagements include performances of the role of that in OzOpera's new opera Midnite written by Rae Marcellino at the 2004 Melbourne Festival and the Windmill Theatre, Adelaide in 2005.
