Welsh-born Australian baritone Roger Howell graduated with distinction from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Opera School. He made his professional debut as Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro for the State Opera of South Australia and has since sung many roles with this company including, the title role in Verdi's Macbeth and Rigoletto; the Count in The Marriage of Figaro; Papageno in The Magic Flute; Leporello in Don Giovanni; Valentin in Faust; Figaro in The Barber of Seville; Belcore in L'Elisir D'Amore and Malatesta in Don Pasquale. Roles undertaken for the West Australian Opera Company include: Dr Bartolo in The Barber of Seville; Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro ; Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor; Sharpless in Madame Butterfly and Escamillo in Carmen. Roger appeared regularly with the Victorian State Opera. Some of the roles he performed were Leporello in Don Giovanni for which he received a Greenroom award; Figaro in both The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville; Marcello and Schaunard in La Bohème; Germont Père in La Traviata; Papageno in The Magic Flute; Sancho Panza in the Australian Premier of Massenet's Don Quichotte and Amonasro in Verdi's Aida. As a result of this last performance, Roger was engaged to sing Amonasro (and Il Re) in an international touring production featuring Willhelmina Fernandez, Richard Margeson and Bruna Baglioni and conducted by Carlo Franci. In 1988, Roger created the role of a legendary Australian singer in the world premier of Peter Dawson: Off the Record for the Adelaide Festival of the Arts. He subsequently toured the show throughout South Australia and to the World Expo in Brisbane. For the Lyric Opera of Queensland Roger has sung Don Alfonso in Così Fan Tutte and Papageno in The Magic Flute. In 1990, Roger travelled to Germany where he was engaged as principal baritone with Pfalztheatre in Kaiserslautern, singing the role of Belcore in L'Elisir D'Amore; the title role in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi; Manfredo in Montemezzi's L'Amore Dei Tre Re; The Speaker in The Magic Flute, and Renato in Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera. He has also appeared at the Wexford Festival of Opera in the role of Tomes in Smetana's The Kiss and with the Opera Orchestra of New York under the baton of Eve Queler in the title role of Rossini's Guglielmo. In early 1998, Roger sang the role of Abimelech for the Sydney Season of Samson and Delila presented by Opera Australia as well as Antonio in The Marriage of Figaro. |
