Greg Hocking [conductor]
After studies at Melbourne University, Greg Hocking joined Queensland Opera and then the Australian Opera. He has conducted many operas and operettas including L'Elisir d'Amore, Un Ballo in Maschera, Don Giovanni and Carmen for Melbourne City Opera, Madama Butterfly for Globe Opera and La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein for Sydney Light Opera, numerous Gilbert and Sullivan operas and many major choral works.
He has conducted the Melbourne University Choral Society, Melbourne University Orchestra, Queensland Bach Society , Queensland Youth Orchestra and the ABC National Training Orchestra. He is currently musical director of the Essendon Choral Society and the Hayden Chamber Orchestra.
A professional theatre producer, Greg is a founder of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Collins Street Grand Music Promenade. He runs the Comedy Club and the Athenaeum Theatre. Among his best known productions are Wogs Out of Work, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew (in the Royal Botanical Gardens), Hair, The Life and Death of Sandy Stone, David Williamson's Top Silk, Siren and Don's Party.
Greg and his partners have also presented many concerts by such artists as Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Peter Schreier, Roger Woodward, No Pogorelich, Elvis Costello, Laurie Anderson, Steven Wright, Stomp and Sir George Martin.
