Geoffrey Harris began his training in Sydney with Isolde Hill and spent three years as a young artist with Opera Australia in their Opera Studio. He has studied voice production and singing internationally with renowned teachers including Ettore Campogagliani, Clems Kaiser-Breme and his maestro for the last fifteen years, Fernando Bandera. Geoffrey's work has encompassed most of the tenor repertoire. He appears regularly in leading roles in opera throughout Australia and New Zealand and as a soloist in concert and oratorio with various Australian symphony orchestras. He has performed many leading roles in works by 20th century and contemporary composers often involving world or Australian premiere performances. Geoffrey made his debut with Opera Australia as Don Josè in Carmen while still a member of the Opera Studio training programme. During this period he also appeared for the company as Beppo in Fra Diavolo; Riccardo in Triumph of Honour and Steuerman in Der Fliegende Holländer along with various other smaller roles. At first known for his comic and acting abilities, Geoffrey progressed through lighter roles to more robust fare such as Otello, Radames, Samson and Calaf. For Opera Australia he has sung the roles of Don Josè, Steuerman, Pang, Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Bob Boles (Peter Grimes), Cassio, Vitek (Makropulos), Radames, Calaf; for Opera New Zealand he has sung Rodolfo, Don Josè, Calaf; for the Western Australia Opera; Rodolfo, il duca, Tassillo (Countess Maritza); for the State Opera of South Australia his roles have included, Rodolfo, Don Josè, Alfredo (La Traviata), Pinkerton, Steuerman, Belfiore (La Finta Giardiniera), Cassio, Count Zupan (Countess Maritza), Count Boni (Czardus Furstin); for the Victoria State Opera he has performed Goro, Monostatos, Remendado, Tamino, Il Duca, Alfredo (La Traviata), Don Josè, Rodolfo; with Opera Queensland he has sung as Remendado, Eisenstein, Steuerman, Cassio, Alfred, Don Josè, Otello; for the Mercury Opera NZ; Don Josè, Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut); for Auckland Opera, Goro and Don Josè. In keeping with his interest in contemporary and 20th century music he has taken lead roles in a number of world and Australian premiere performances including Gillian Whithead's Bride of Fortune for the 1991 Festival of Perth, Chairman Mao in Nixon in China for the Adelaide Festival in 1992 and Roberton in Bitter Calm which was broadcast on N.Z.B.C. as the centrepiece for the 1993 New Zealand Festival. Other Adelaide festival appearances have included performances in Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Transposed Heads; Janácek's Makropulos Affair; and The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Previous Australian premiers include Pierrot in Ullman's Der Kaiser Von Atlantis for the Sydney Conservatorium Opera and Flamand in Capriccio of Richard Strauss with the State Opera of South Australia. He has also sung in Brian Howard's Inner Voices and the role of Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress. |
