Thomas hails from the New South Wales Riverina township of Deniliquin and moved to Melbourne in 1987. He began vocal tuition in 1996 and has sung with the Melbourne City Opera chorus in productions of Carmen, La Bohème, Cavalleria Rusticana, I Pagliacci, L'Elisir d'Amore and Un Ballo in Maschera. He also appeared as Parpignol in MCO's La Bohème.

In 1999 Thomas won both the Mordialloc Eisteddfod Aria from Grand Opera and Song from Light Opera. He was also a semi-finalist in the Melbourne Herald-Sun Aria. In 2000 other performances included the role of Don Ottavio in MCO's Don Giovanni and El Dancairo in MCO's Carmen which was also performed at the 'Spray Farm' Festival, Queenscliff early in 2001.

Thomas has also performed oratorio work with the Essendon Choral Society productions of Saul and The Messiah by Handel, which also included in December 2000 a performance of The People's Messiah at the Melbourne Town Hall. He has also performed numerous concerts with Melbourne City Opera.

A member of the Victoria Police Force, Thomas has also performed at functions on behalf of the Chief Commissioner's Office.
