As a professional singer Sue performed as solo artist in all the major centres in South Africa, New York City and Boston (U.S.A) before emigrating to New Zealand in 1997 where she has continued to perform. Her repertoire ranges from classical works encompassing opera, oratorio and lieder, to songs from the shows and light/jazzy pieces. In South Africa she sang solo roles in opera productions for all four arts organisations: Natal Performing Arts Council (NAPAC), Cape Performing Arts Board (CAPAB), Performing Arts Council of the Orange Free State (PACOFS), and she was contracted as mezzo soprano soloist to the Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal (PACT) for six years. During this time she sang the role of Amneris to the Aida of Martina Arroyo in the opening season of the State Theatre in Pretoria. She was awarded the Nederburg Prize for Opera for her performance of this role. She also sang the role of 'Fenena' in Nabucco in the opening season of the new Sand Du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein. Other operatic highlights were singing the role of Maddalena in Rigoletto for which she won the Vita Award for opera, and `Dorabella' in Cosi fan tutte. She has appeared on television in a number of operatic excerpts, as well as singing the title role in the opera Carmen which was broadcast on national television. She was also a regular lieder recitalist with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). She was mezzo soloist in many oratorios and concerts, and she was part of a professional quartet, The Solo Ensemble. Her name has appeared in the 'Who's Who of Southern Africa' since 1986. While she lived in the United States Sue sang in numerous concerts in Boston. A highlight of her New York City concert performances was her appearance as a soloist in 1995 in a Verdi concert in Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Centre, New York City. Since emigrating from the U.S.A. to New Zealand in 1997, Sue performed as soloist in the Devenport Arts Festival, in a concert for the Archbishop of Canterbury at the Auckland Cathedral, and in Rotorua as alto soloist in The Elijah. Since coming to live in Christchurch in 1998, she has sung solo roles in productions for Canterbury Opera including: Olga in Eugene Onegin, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Marthe in Faust, and Berta in Barber of Seville. She was soloist in 'Opera in the Park' in 1999, soloist in concerts and oratorios in both the Anglican and Catholic Cathedrals and soloist in the Town Hall for several University of Canterbury graduation ceremonies. She was also alto soloist in the Messiah with the Christchurch City Choir in December 1998. Sue gave a lieder recital in the Great Hall in October 2000, she sings in a professional quartet, "VOCALPOINT," and has performed in a trio with Tony Ferner, principal flutist of the CSO and Mark Secker, In 1998 Sue sang the role of Santuzza in Melbourne City Opera's production of Cavalleria Rusticana. |
